San Diego Unified School District to Host Veterans and Family Career Fair, Amid Teacher Shortage

Twelve school districts are participating in the nationwide effort to help veterans find jobs as teachers.

The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) will host a Veterans and Families Career Fair on Saturday, Nov. 19, in an effort to solve a teacher shortage by employing veterans.

The event in San Diego will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 19, at Scripps Ranch High School, located on 10410 Treena St, 92131. Veterans with college degrees will be shown how to enter the classroom as a teacher with full credentials. Those who are not interested in teaching will be informed about other positions available, said an SDUSD official.

On site interviews will be held at the fair for substitute clerical positions and substitute teachers, according to SDUSD. Attendees interested in working as classroom assistants can take the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE), with the standard $7 fee waived. The staff will speak with veterans, and answer questions on the application and hiring process.

With a lack of diverse candidates, the large urban school districts are facing a concerning amount of hiring obstacles. Besides teachers, there's a need for support staff jobs such as bus drivers, IT, diesel mechanics, instructional aides and food service positions, said an SDUSD official.

On the other hand, many military members are being unexpectedly forced to leave the military due to federal budget cuts. An ever-growing number of military service members must leave voluntarily, and subsequently, struggle to find employment, said an SDUSD official.

In the week after Veterans Day, 12 large school districts are collaborating across the nation, to bring veterans and their spouses to events that showcase all the employment opportunities in education.

All participants are encouraged to register for the San Diego event online.
