DA Investigator, Dog Hit by Bullets in Shooting Near Skyline

San Diego Police say an investigator with the DA's Office fired his service weapon in a neighborhood near Skyline Wednesday.

A dog and an investigator with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office were struck by gunfire Wednesday when a DA investigator fired his weapon outside a home near Skyline, officials confirmed.

Several police cars were parked outside a home in the 7700 block of Dry Creek Place near Jamacha Road in the Lomita area. The location is west of State Route 125 and south of State Route 94.

San Diego Police responded to the neighborhood after someone reported shots fired just after 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Neighbors told NBC 7 they heard two to three shots.

"Two DA investigators came to the residence on a follow up. The pit bull charged the investigators. One of the investigators fired rounds from his service pistol, striking the dog. One of the rounds ricocheted into his partner causing a minor injury," SDPD Lt. Steve Behrendt told NBC 7.

Police believe the injury was to the investigator's left calf.

The DA's office confirmed the investigator was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Video from NBC 7's Newschopper showed a dog laying on the path just a few feet from the front door of the home.

Animal control officers arrived at 11 a.m. and removed the animal from the property. The dog was covered completely by a blanket and loaded into a county vehicle.

Behrendt said the dog was taken to a nearby animal hospital. Animal control officers returned to the home and taped a note to the front door.

The San Diego County Department of Animal Services took the dog into its care. Officials said the female pit bull, about 3 years old, has three injuries, including bullet fragments in her chest. Those fragments caused a collapsed lung.

A veterinarian removed one bullet and has put the dog on oxygen. The pit bull is doing OK but will need time for her lungs to heal, officials say. Animal Services transferred her to an emergency facility for the night.
