Riley School Fire Deemed Arson

Someone set pine needles on fire outside a storage facility on the campus of Riley School on Mt Ackerly Drive in Clairemont.

An overnight fire that damaged a San Diego-area K-8 school was deliberately set according to San Diego Fire-Rescue officials.

Someone set pine needles on fire outside a storage facility on the campus of Riley School on Mt Ackerly Drive in Clairemont.

β€œIt’s terrible,” said Fredy Garf who lives nearby. β€œThis is such a nice neighborhood and it’s hard to believe that somebody would do that.”

The fire alarm was activated just before 5 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters arrived and found damage to a set of double doors leading to the storage facility, as well as an awning above and some electrical wires.

Officials were looking into how someone could have gained access to the gated campus.

β€œI don’t know if it was just kids being kids and someone thought it would be fun to set the school on fire or if it’s a homeless situation,” said resident Curtis Dornei.

School is in summer session and students were expected to arrive at 8:30 a.m. The traditional school year begins after Labor Day.
