San Diego Has Something to Cheer About

San Diego State cheer wins National Championship

The San Diego State cheerleading squad finished first at the 2009 UCA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships on Sunday at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida.

The Aztecs placed higher than Morehead State University and defending champion University of Memphis, who finished second and third, respectfully.

San Diego State, which performed ninth in the final round, had to wait until all 13 teams had performed to know its fate.  Squads were judged on crowd leading ability, practicality of skills and overall cheer impression.

"Our squad was flawless in the semi's and again in the finals," said cheerleading head coach Jen Kwappenberg.  "To have performed so well is a credit to their talent and commitment year round to represent San Diego State. I am thrilled that the ladies brought home the National Championship trophy for Division One All Girl."
