San Diego City Water Rate to Increase in August

The increased was approved by the City Council in 2015 for water reliability and infrastructure improvements

The water rate for San Diego City residents is expected to increase by more than 2 percent in August, the city announced Friday.

The increased was approved by the City Council in 2015 for water reliability and infrastructure improvements.

For the average customer, using about 1,200 cubic feet of water, the 2.16 percent increase will amount to about $3.75 on the water bill, the city said.

The increase is lower than the previously approved 5 percent because of the availability of local water sources and the lower-than-expected increase from the San Diego County Water Authority, the city said.

The increase still needs to get approval from the Water Authority, which is meeting on June 28. The agency is expected to approve the rate hike.

The increase is the latest in a series of increases over the year. Southern California homeowners have seen their water rates go up almost 400 percent in 10 years.

There is an assistance program, Help to Others (H20) for people who need help paying their water bill, according to the city.
