Samurai-Sword Attack Suspect Enters Plea

A man accused of attacking his father with a samurai sword over the Christmas weekend pleaded not guilty on Wednesday.

John Cahan, 39, was arraigned in an El Cajon courtroom on Wednesday via closed-circuit TV.

Cahan allegedly walked into his 69-year old father's bedroom in Spring Valley early Sunday, woke him up and swung the sword around before striking his father in the leg. The younger man had allegedly ordered his father earlier to hold out his hand so he could cut it off.

Cahan called 911 about 90 minutes after the attack. His father was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A motive for the attack has not been disclosed.

Cahan's bail was set at $150,000.
