Welfare Check in Normal Heights Triggers SWAT Activity

A person died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound that triggered a SWAT team response Friday night in Normal Heights, police said.

San Diego police initially made a welfare check at the home near the intersection of Felton Street and Collier Avenue just after 6 p.m.

Officers requested assistance from the department's Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) and SWAT units responded later.

Officers at the scene told NBC 7 around 8:30 p.m. that the subject of the welfare check was dead of an apparent suicide.

Police said evacuated neighbors would be let back into their homes at around 9:30 p.m.
