SDPD Take Armed Suspect Barricaded Inside Mission Bay Motel Into Custody

An armed suspect who led San Diego police on a pursuit through Mission Bay Sunday morning before barricading himself inside the Trade Winds Motel on Mission Bay Drive has been taken into custody, according to police.

Police identified the man, who was driving a U-Haul Sunday morning, as a suspect in a case involving stolen guns. The suspect failed to yield to officers in the 2700 block of Grand Avenue earlier Sunday. SDPD followed the suspect to the 4300 block of Mission Bay Drive where he fled on foot.

The man ran into the motel where he was somehow able to dig through two walls and tried to get through a third.

Police deployed chemical agents, but the suspect locked himself in a rear bathroom. Police gained entry inside the room, deployed a police dog and the suspect was finally taken into custody around 10 a.m.

He will be booked on numerous charges.

Police briefly detained a woman who was with the man in the U-Haul, but she was released.
