Hours-Long Standoff in San Ysidro Called Off by SDPD

San Diego police ended a standoff with a man who refused to come out of his San Ysidro home after his wife accused him of threatening her with a knife.

The incident started at around 11:30 a.m. when the man’s wife called 911 from outside the home and told police her husband had a weapon. Psychiatric Emergency Response Team officers surrounded the home on Carmel Drive and police placed a nearby school on lockdown.

At around 4:10 p.m. SDPD said it was scaling back its response. Police said the man had stopped responding, and they didn't need to force their way into his home because he wasn't a threat to the neighborhood.

Within minutes, the patrol cars that once flooded the street were gone residents were allowed back in their homes.

Maria Godoy says the man has been a problem neighbor in the past and that she has a restraining order against him.

β€œMy family has a problem with him. We needed to put cameras in the house because he is aggressive,” Godoy said. She described the man as always mad and frequently yelling.

SDPD is still investigating the alleged threat and could still bring charges against him.
