SDPD Responds to Man With Gun Barricaded Inside Hillcrest Home

An armed man who prompted a standoff in a Hillcrest neighborhood was taken into custody nearly four hours after police were called.

The suspect, identified as Bobby Lockheart, was taken to a nearby hospital for a mental evaluation and treatment of injuries. He was later booked into the downtown jail.

Officers descended on a home in the 400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue near Fifth Avenue at about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) said Lockheart was inside the home armed with a shotgun.

Officers staged outside the home's porch with guns drawn as negotiators attempted to get the man to come out, SDPD said.

Surrounding apartments and a nearby deli were evacuated during the standoff. Less than a block of Pennsylvania and Fifth avenues was blocked off to traffic.

Basil Scofidio works in the area. "The community is really tight-knit," he told NBC 7. " For example, we got a lot of phone calls before we even came in that this was going on. So a lot of people talk to each other and take care of each other."

Police received a 911 call Wednesday morning claiming a man with a gun had taken two people hostage, but SDPD later learned there were no hostages.

Two other people were inside the home when SDPD was called but were able to get out on their own, SDPD said.

Lockheart periodically approached the doorway holding up a mattress but did not cooperate with officer's calls to come out of the home.

SDPD Officer Steve Bourassa said the suspect was drinking alcohol while talking to officers through the doorway.

Police say at one point, Lockheart raised the loaded shotgun. In response, officers fired bean bag rounds on the man and a K-9 was deployed.

Four hours after the standoff began, Lockheart was taken into custody. SDPD have not yet determined why he would not comply with officers.
