The shooting happened in the 3200-block of Via Marin in La Jolla Village.
Neighbors called 911 around 9:30 a.m. reporting the sound of gunshots, according to San Diego police.
When police approached the suspect, he refused to come out. This led to a standoff that lasted several hours. 10 nearby homes were evacuated, according to officials.
“When we have gunshots in an apartment, a male inside that refuses to come out, a round that’s already gone through an adjoining apartment, we definitely considered him armed and dangerous at that point,” Lt. Tom Underwood with San Diego police said.
The man eventually surrendered to police and was arrested.
A neighbor named Chris identified the suspect as “Alan.” She said he had just bought a new handgun and enjoyed shooting for recreation.

“Really responsible, caring kind of guy. Helped out some of the older neighbors,” Chris said.
The man was booked into the San Diego County Jail. At the very minimum, he’ll be charged with discharge of a firearm in a reckless manner, according to officials.
No one was hurt when the shots were fired.
