Suspect in Custody Following Deadly Attack with Hammer

An argument between two men at a Midway District bus stop turned deadly Monday when one of the men attacked the other with a hammer.

The San Diego Police Department received multiple reports at around 6:15 p.m. of a man wearing a Santa Claus hat attacking another man with a hammer, according to SDPD Lt. Mike Holden.

Officers arrived at the scene on the 3800 block of Midway Drive to find the victim lying in the number 2 eastbound lane.

Police believe the suspect struck the victim in the face or head with the hammer causing him to fall to the ground and then continued to hit the victim in the face and head multiple times, Lt. Holden said.

Despite CPR administered by witnesses, police and paramedics, the victim, identified only as an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, a 50-year-old white male, remained at the scene and was taken into custody with minor incident and transported to police headquarters, Holden said.

Holden said detectives have no idea what the mental state of the suspect was at the time of the attack, or whether he or the victim were homeless. Investigators did determine that the suspect was not wearing a Santa Claus hat, but had his hair dyed red and shaped into a cone.
