On Saturday, the couple was supposed to catch a flight to San Francisco but when they failed to arrive, concerned family members asked San Diego police officers to make a welfare check at the couple's home.

Officers got no answer to knocks at the door and calls to the home on Via Rivera.

Sainz said officers then looked through a rear window and saw a person lying on the floor. Officers forced their way inside the home and discovered the couple dead inside with trauma to their upper bodies.

Sources within SDPD told NBC 7 the husband and wife were both stabbed multiple times.

No one other than the victims was found inside the home, police said, and the contents of the home did not appear to be disturbed.
