SDG&E's Sunrise Powerlink Gets Going

The powerlink will connect renewable energy from the Imperial County to San Diego.

The first step in building the controversial Sunrise powerlink is underway.

The powerlink will run through the Cleveland National Forest,  and connect renewable power generators in the Imperial Valley to the San Diego grid.

According to our media partner the North County Times,  San Diego Gas and Electric says preliminary work was planned to begin this week.  The first step is upgrading the infrastructure at the San Luis Rey and South Bay substations.

SDG&E  will also set up a construction yard and office in Alpine. Construction on the line itself is expected to start later this year.
