Loren Nancarrow, a longtime icon of San Diego local news, has died after an 11-month battle with brain cancer.
He was surrounded by his family when he passed away at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a post on his Facebook page. He leaves behind his wife and three children.
Nancarrow, 60, was diagnosed with stage three terminal brain cancer in February, after which he retired from more than 30 years in television news.
His time as a reporter, weatherman and anchor at three San Diego TV stations made him a staple in many local households.
After he retired, Nancarrow turned his energy to helping his fellow cancer patients.
He asked the community to support a healing garden at the Scripps Radiation Treatment Center, and he documented his battle with cancer – as well as his reflections on life – on his blog, The Nancarrow Project.
“The most important lesson I’ve learned throughout all of this, is that it is far better to do good for others, than to do good for oneself,” he said in his last blog post on December 26.

Nancarrow’s family has invited the public to an ocean memorial in honor of the man they called husband, father, friend and hero. They will gather at South Cardiff State Beach on Monday at 4 p.m.
Guests should bring a candle to light for Nancarrow, as well as a stand-up paddle board, surfboard, kayak or beach towel.
