SD Explained: How to Replace Marne Foster

With San Diego Unified School Board Trustee Marne Foster’s plea agreement and sudden resignation, the rest of the board is left scrambling to fill the seat.

They had the option to appoint someone temporarily or hold a special election. But with the 2016 primary and general election right around the corner, it would’ve been expensive and cumbersome to hold a special primary and runoff in time. They’ve instead decided to appoint someone by Feb. 23.

The appointed member, though, will only stay in office until the elected trustee replaces him or her in December.

So far, two candidates are vying for the seat.

On this week’s San Diego Explained, VOSD’s Scott Lewis and NBC 7’s Monica Dean explain the school board’s election process and how it’s different than other elections.
