Evacuations, Road Closures Lifted In Area of Caliente Fire

A temporary evacuation shelter was set up at San Ysidro High School at 5353 Airway Road, San Diego, CA 92154

Authorities closed roads and evacuated homes, businesses and schools in Otay Mesa as firefighters worked to extinguish the Caliente Fire that tore through a wood pallet yard and threatened a parking lot full of smei-trucks

Just before 7:30 p.m., The San Diego Police Department said that all evacuation orders and road closures in the area of the fire had been lifted, and said southbound traffic into the Cross Border Xpress terminal had reopened.

SDPD had a mandatory evacuation order in place for areas south of St. Andrews Avenue, west of La Media Road, east of Cactus Drive, and north of the U.S.-Mexico border, and an evacuation warning was in place for areas between La Media Road and Otay Center Drive.

At one point, southbound traffic on La Media Road was closed, as was the Britannia Boulevard off-ramp from eastbound Interstate 905. Southbound traffic on Britannia and La Media from I-905 was closed, and north and southbound traffic to the Cross Border Xpress terminal was stopped.

Southwestern College closed its Higher Education Center at the Otay Mesa Campus and said classes were cancelled for the rest of the day.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department last estimated the fire at 490 acres and 50-percent contained at 5:55 p.m.

The American Red Cross received reports of 60 to 70 people displaced. A temporary evacuation shelter was set up at San Ysidro High School at 5353 Airway Road, San Diego, CA 92154.

The Red Cross said there would be canteen services 

No injuries were reported and no structures were lost, according to the SDFD.
