Nobody Hurt in Building Collapse

No victims have been found in East Village collapse

First responders said there were no victims in a building collapse in San Diego’s East Village on Thursday.

Portions of two stories gave way shortly before 11 a.m. in a self-storage building near the intersection of 16th Street and Island Avenue shortly. Fire Rescue spokesman Maurice Luque said a plywood floor on the third floor gave way, and all the hardcover textbooks that were stored in the third-floor unit also went through the second-story floor as well. The collapse ruptured a water line, causing some minor flooding until water service could be shut off about 10 minutes after firefighters arrived.

No victims were found in an initial search of the structure, but firefighters conducted a second sweep with the help of service dogs to be sure nobody was hurt.
