    Body Pulled from Creek During Dangerous Rescue Operation

    NBC 7's Erika Cervantes reports from teh Escondido Creek where a Swift Water Rescue team retrieved man's body Thursday afternoon. (Published Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019)

    A Swift Water Rescue crew retrieved a man's body from the Escondido Creek Thursday. 

    The Escondido Fire Department responded to reports of a man who was kayaking in the creek near Rose Street. Firefighters couldn't find anyone when they got to the creek so they called a Swift Water Rescue team.

    An EFD Batallion Chief said crews found the man stuck in a bush under rapid water in the creek. The chief said crews believed the man was dead and he was confirmed deceased after his body was recovered.

    A surfboard or paddleboard was also recovered from the creek.

    A man who was swept into a flood channel in Escondido is believed to be dead. NBC 7's Erika Cervantes has more.

    Dianne Dafiedler works near the site of the rescue and said she was told by coworkers there was a man kayaking in the creek.

    “It’s just hard to imagine that you would go to that extreme because of flooding," she said.

    The operation caused 30-minute delays to the Sprinter train service. The North County Transit District said the Escondido Police Department closed the tracks west of the transit center.

    The NCTD said a bridge bus was requested to get passengers from the Escondido center to the Nordahl stop. Riders can also take BREEZE route 305 to get to Vista.
