Report: Teacher Picked Up Child at Polinsky

More than just "he said, she said" according to investigators

An elementary school teacher, accused of having a sexual relationship with a child who was once in her 6th grade class, reportedly picked the boy up from a county-run shelter for children, according to a television news report.

Thirty-two year old Carmina Eric Lopez was charged January 30 with eight counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.  Read article

Lopez is accused of starting a sexual relationship with a boy who was in her sixth grade class when she was teaching at Nestor Elementary School in 2004. Police say now, four years later, the child has come forward with details of the relationship.

Lopez pleaded not guilty at her arraignment.  Her bail was set at $2 million.  She has been ordered to stay away from alleged victim.

The acts occurred at school, in Lopez's home and in a car in both Chula Vista and San Diego because the suspect lived in both cities over the last four years, police said. The victim, who is now 15, said the last incident happened in early 2008, police said.

Lopez became friends with the victim's family and ultimately was asked to become the victim's godmother, according to investigators.

New allegations were made public when KFMB interviewed an aunt of the victim. The family remembered the time the teacher spent with the child. "She used to come around, not only on her work hours. She was here on her free time," an aunt said according to the television news report.

The report alleged that Lopez picked up the boy in her car from the Polinsky Children's center in 2008. The article states privacy laws prevent Polinsky from confirming whether the teacher actually picked up the boy.

Since the alleged relationship began, Lopez has begun teaching at Sunnyslope School.  Parents and residents outside the school reacted to news of the arrest Thursday.  While some were angry over the allegations, one parent wanted investigators to provide proof before she believes the accusations. She was booked into the Chula Vista Jail and transported to the Las Colinas Women's Detention facility.

The child is currently being held in juvenile hall for an unrelated incident where he allegedly punched his uncle in the face, according to KFMB.
