Report: Sex Crime Victims Failed by Local School

Employees at a high school failed to follow state laws requiring them to report suspicions of child abuse, according to a report by a private investigator.

The investigator was hired by the Grossmont Union High School District to look at Helix High School, where four ex-teachers have been convicted of sex crimes involving students since late 2006.

The investigator found employees at the school failed to immediately report suspicions of child abuse and that school administrators failed to take preventive measures after the first case.

Helix officials vehemently disputed the report and plan to issue a detailed response later.

The school's response to the first complaints and the arrest of the first teacher created an environment where students could not expect their future complaints would be believed or taken seriously, the report states.
