Report: City Schools Face Giant Budget Gap

Just one year after 900 teachers were pink-slipped, the San Diego Unified School District again faces a large budget gap, according to a published report.

Bean counters at SDUSD say the district faces a $25 million budget gap in 2009 and are forecasting an $8 million shortfall the year after that.

Even more alarming, the figures don't factor in salary or benefit increases, nor do they include cost-of-living adjustments.

Last year, more than 900 SDUSD teachers were sent pink slips because of a budget gap of nearly the same size. In the end, about 400 district employees were laid off.
