There are schools in California at risk of crumbling in a temblor, despite a state regulatory agency tasked with ensuring school buildings are safe -- in part because that agency doesn't have much power, according to SFGate.
State auditors revealed these findings and more in an audit released this week.
Nearly 25 percent of school buildings constructed within the last three years did not receive a safety certification from the agency. That's 20,000 school buildings statewide without an earthquake safety certification, California Watch reported.
The Division of the State Architect has "lax oversight" and limited power to penalize school districts, despite some schools built with publicized safety hazards and poor seismic safety, the website reported.
In three years, only 29 total projects were delayed or halted so that builders could be more earthquake-safe, the website reported.
