RB Residents Lobby Poway for Park Space

Rancho Bernardo residents are trying to save a 10-acre parcel of land before its auctioned off to the highest bidder.

The residents made their case at a Poway Unified School District meeting Tuesday night.

The school district owns the land which is located on Avenida Venusto, and plans to sell it as surplus land.

But opponents contend it was donated to the school district with the understanding that it be turned into a park or school.

They said Rancho Bernardo only has one park, and it needs another.

"The most important thing about this property is it's not just for RB residents," said Robin Kaufman, a Rancho Bernardo resident. "It's for neighboring residents. They also participate in our sports."

Supporters of a park are asking the school board to delay the sale until the city of San Diego can decide whether to acquire the land and turn it into a park.

Right now, the land is set to be auctioned off for at least $6 million in January.
