Shane Hidalgo was headed to a charity event when his vehicle crashed into a truck

A pro in the worlds of skating and community service has passed away.

Twenty-four-year-old skater Shane Hidalgo of Oceanside was killed Sunday in a car crash in Mexico, our media partners the North County Times reported.

Hidalgo was sponsored by the professional skateboarding team, Gravity Skateboards and Skater Socks. However his legacy is now defined by his passion for helping teens. He worked for Urban Surf4Kids, a nonprofit that teaches kids how to surf and swim, according to their website.

Hidalgo and a friend were driving near Cabo in Mexico in a camper to a charity event. The vehicle swerved into the path of an oncoming truck. Hidalgo was killed and the passenger in his car was seriously injured, Hidalgo's sister, Valerie Guerrero told the NCT.

Hidalgo graduated from Oceanside High School in 2008 and was part of the school’s surf team.

A fundraiser with a raffle and silent auction in support of Hidalgo’s family is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at Oceanside's Cabo Grill, 212 N. Tremont St.
