Poway Drivers May Soon Be Going in Circles

There's a proposal to add roundabouts in Poway

You’ll find them in North Park and Bird Rock. Now, there’s a proposal to add roundabouts in Poway to help ease traffic congestion.

Poway’s city council will hold a discussion next week to discuss the pros and cons of replacing lights and/or stop signs at two intersections, Del Poniente Road and High Valley Road and at Durhullen Drive and Sunset Lane, with single-lane roundabouts, according to MyLocalNews.

Roundabouts, or traffic circles, are used by traffic engineers to slow traffic and make pedestrian crossing safer.

The hope is to ease traffic to and from the high school on Espola Road in the mornings and afternoons.

Last summer, La Jolla completed the addition of five roundabouts along La Jolla Boulevard in the Bird Rock area. The program is considered a role model. Several months after their addition, dozens of transportation officials from around the state visited the area for a demonstration.

The Poway council meeting is planned for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at council chambers, 13325 Civic Center Drive.
