Poway Crash Left Hundreds in the Dark

Car crashed into power pole on Espola Rd.

A crash in Poway sent one driver to the hospital and left hundreds without power Thursday morning.

The driver in the accident crashed into a power pole in the 14000 block of Espola Rd. at about 5:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire Department.

As of 7 a.m., power was restored to all but 144 customers. SDG&E estimated that power would return for those customers by 3 p.m.

Traffic was blocked in the northbound lane of Espola Rd., as well as the southbound lane of Durhullen Dr.

The driver of the car became distracted as he was driving along Espola Rd. Sheriff's deputies said he was reaching for an object on the passenger floorboard when he veered off the road. His truck flipped over as he hit the power pole. Another driver collided with the pole.

The driver of the truck was extracted by fire department crews and transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the second car was not harmed, but he was forced to stay in his car until SDG&E could shut off power.

SDG&E arrived on the scene to make repairs to the pole, but the downed wires left over 1,000 residents without power.
