Possible TB Exposure at Olympian High School

Free testing will be offered to students on campus next week

The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) is warning the Olympian High School community about a possible tuberculosis exposure.

The HHSA said the exposure occurred between February 15 and May 15. Students will be offered free testing next Wednesday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the campus in Chula Vista.

“Testing is recommended for all those exposed to assure they are not infected, since they may not have symptoms,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “For anyone infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent disease.”

TB can be transmitted through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infected person. Symptoms include cough, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss.

Those who show symptoms, or who are immune-compromised and may not show symptoms, should see a doctor.

TB is treated and cured with antibiotics. Most people who are exposed do not become infected, the HHSA said.

To date, there have been 75 cases of TB reported in San Diego County in 2018. There were 237 reported cases in 2016 and 258 in 2016.
