New Parking Rates, Meters Coming to Parts of San Diego Waterfront

The Port's proposed changes would affect Spanish Landing, Shelter Island and the North Embarcadero area.

Parking rates will soon increase at Shelter Island and new parking pay stations are going in downtown as part of a parking overhaul plan in San Diego.

The Port of San Diego is holding a public outreach meeting next week to discuss the changes at three downtown locations.

Port staff will be recommending metering changes to the Board of Port Commissioners for approval at its board meeting on Sept. 8.

The Port wants the community attend to learn more about the proposed changes and offer feedback.

The changes include parking rate increases on Shelter Island, new pay stations at Spanish Landing and new Smart Meter installation in the North Embarcadero Crescent.

If approved, Shelter Island parking rates would increase to $1.25 an hour, within the meter rate range of $1 to $2.50. The Port would also begin monitoring the meters on the island from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, instead of Monday through Saturday.

New pay stations at Spanish landing would also be installed, with rates ranging from $1 to $2.50 an hour and seven-day monitoring from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Finally, the North Embarcadero Crescent area near the intersection of Laurel and North Harbor Drive would see 54 new Smart Meters with a similar rate range of $1 to $2.50 per hour and seven-day monitoring from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 4 in the Port Administration Building Training Room at 3165 Pacific Highway from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Revenue from parking meters helps fund Harbor Police Law Enforcement, 22 public parks, environmental conservation and public art.
