Port Gives ‘Kissing Statue' One Year to Fund Replica

Unconditional Surrender may transition to a permanent bronze version if group can raise 1 million dollars

Supporters of the statue of a sailor and nurse embracing in a kiss now have one year to raise money for a permanent, bronze version.

The Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners voted yesterday to accept an offer for a permanent version of "Unconditional Surrender" at Tuna Harbor.

The original was scheduled to depart at the end of February this year. However last month, the port extended the loan agreement until May.

The neighboring USS Midway Museum will lead the fundraising effort.
