Popular Escondido Restaurant Abruptly Closes, County Finds Rodents

Two other Centre City Cafe locations in Mission Valley and La Mesa remain open.

The Centre City Cafe in Escondido has abruptly closed its doors because of rodents.

NBC 7 spoke with Frank and Jewell Loebus, who have been coming to the restaurant for years.

β€œWe've been coming here at least once or twice a month," said Jewell Loebus.

They said they tried over the weekend and again on Monday night but the doors remained closed.

A food facility inspection dated from last Friday and Saturday shows vermin found in the restaurant on both days, leading to an immediate closure.

Another major violation listed was that foods were not being stored at the proper temperatures or in good condition.

The Loebus' said they have never seen issues like these dining at their favorite eatery.

β€œThere for a while, the booths looked like they needed to be replaced for something like that but I've never seen anything dirty or anything like that," they said.

They added that as long as it gets the clear from the county, they will go back.

β€œWe'll certainly give it a pause, but we've been coming here for years, never had a clue, never had anything questionable," said Jewell.

NBC 7 did reach out to the owners for comment on the closure and when the restaurant may reopen. As of Monday night, we had not received a response.

The two other locations in Mission Valley and La Mesa remain open.
