Police to Up Patrols in Hillcrest

A new police bike team is set to launch in Hillcrest to increase patrol of the popular neighborhood.

Six officers on special equipped bikes will patrol the area from 5 p.m. - 3 a.m., Wednesday - Saturday, officials said.

Four of the bikes were donated by local Hillcrest businessmen, two more were donated by the Hillcrest Business Association.

The bikes run about $1100 each, said HBA executive Director Benjamin Nichols.

The Hybrid road bikes are equipped with special gear for police officers to patrol, Nichols explained.

The funding for the bike team will allow them to patrol limited days, but more funding could be coming, said Councilman Todd Gloria's Deputy Chief of Staff Katie Keach.

Gloria's district includes the Hillcrest neighborhood.

Gloria lobbied for a similar patrol in North Park, where Keach says it has really helped the neighborhood.

According to Keach the bike officers are already on patrol, but the official date the officers will start their beat is slated for Sept. 29.
