A man is recovering in the hospital after he was shot during an argument in Ocean Beach, San Diego police confirmed to NBC 7 San Diego.

The shooting happened after 5 p.m. on Ebers Street near Muir Street.

San Diego Police [SDPD] says 30-year old Jeffrey Renteria was shot three times by his girlfriend's brother. The injuries were to Renteria's right side with at least one to his abdomen, police said.

The violent altercation unfolded in front of neighbors, who say Renteria ran outside the home, screaming for someone to call 911.

“I heard four gunshots, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop,'” witness Darlene Crowson told NBC 7.

“I heard a gunshot and I thought it was on the news,” Celia Corral said.

When Renteria collapsed near of an alley two blocks up the street, residents rushed to help.

“He seemed to be very coherent. His wounds were super no bueno. Not good,” Corral said.

While the injuries are not considered life threatening, this was an argument that could have ended much worse, SDPD officials said.

Renteria's sister, Becky Touchstone was the only other person inside the house at the time of the shooting. She was interviewed at length by police and spoke exclusively to NBC 7.

“He's a really smart guy and if he survives he's going to show the whole world free energy and change everything,” Touchstone said.

When asked what may have started the argument, Touchstone said, "It's none of you guys' business."

Police say they found the handgun used in the shooting inside the house.

Neighbors aren't so sure given that what started behind closed doors ended in the middle of their street.

The suspect was questioned and detained by police.
