Somebody Knows Who Killed Her

Police are hoping that the public can help them find a white full-size SUV seen in the area where a 15-year-old was shot and killed at a Clairemont park early Friday morning.

Joanna Vargas, 15, a junior at James Madison High School, was with her boyfriend and another couple in the park around 1:15 a.m. Friday when she was gunned down. Police detectives believe it to be a random shooting.

Her mother thought Vargas was at home sleeping. Estella Martinez said she had no idea her daughter even had a boyfriend.

The vehicle, which may be a Toyota Sequoia, was seen on a street near Lindbergh Park, around the same time as the shooting, according to Lt. Kevin Rooney.

After the shooting, police said they were investigating reports of the white SUV. Now they say they do believe it was involved in the shooting.

The vehicle was parked in the 4100 block of Ashford Street and drove towards Balboa Avenue, Rooney said.
