Police Arrest Man After Apartment Fire for Manufacturing Pot

Investigators said Jesse Estes had been attempting to extract hash oil from marijuana when he caused the explosion and fire.

A man was arrested and booked into jail after investigators discovered he was allegedly manufacturing marijuana when they searched his apartment following a fire.

Jesse Estes, 33, was arrested on Thursday and booked into Vista Detention Facility. According to the Carlsbad Police Department, he had been manufacturing marijuana for sale inside his apartment.

Officers initially responded to reports of an explosion around 9 p.m. Wednesday on the 2200 block of Avenida Magnifica in Carlsbad. Upon arriving on scene, they discovered that there had been a kitchen fire inside an apartment which had been extinguished by a resident.

Police say Estes had attempted to escape from the apartment but he was taken into custody by officers outside of the building.

Estes suffered burn injuries and was transported to the UCSD Hospital for treatment.

Investigators said Estes had been attempting to extract hash oil from marijuana when he caused the explosion and fire. The process requires use of butane, a flammable substance.

A resident inside the home was able to put out the flames using a fire extinguisher.

Estes was taken into custody Thursday morning, after being released from the hospital.
