San Jose Plane Crash Victims Identified

Aircraft crashed near Mt. Hamilton

Two people were killed Saturday when a single-engine airplane crashed east of San Jose in unincorporated Santa Clara County, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The coroner's office said Monday that 53-year-old David Hartley and 49-year-old John Bergsma III were killed in the crash near Mt. Hamilton.

Both men were from Wilton, about 20 miles southeast of Sacramento.

The Champion Citabria, tail No. N5174X, departed from Watsonville around 9:30 a.m. Saturday and was reported missing by the occupants' family members and friends Saturday evening, according to Gregor.

The plane was found on Mount Hamilton early Sunday morning by search crews with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, Gregor said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
