Pedestrian Struck by Train Downtown

Amtrak passengers evacuate train

An Amtrak train hit and killed a man Wednesday morning near the Downtown train station.

The accident occurred at about 6:15 a.m. on Kettner Blvd. and W. Palm St., according to officials.

A sheriff's sergeant on scene said the pedestrian didn't appear to hear the train coming, despite the train's engineer using multiple horns and lights.

He was hit with his back to the train. Authorities do not believe he committed suicide.

Passengers on an Amtrack Surfliner evacuated the train, which was headed north when the accident happened. They prepared to board another train while authorities evaluated the scene.

Train traffic was not impacted
