Pedestrian Killed By Car Near UCSD

A woman was struck and killed by a car while attempting to cross La Jolla Village Drive near UCSD around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The 23-year-old female pedestrian and a friend were crossing La Jolla Village Drive overpass at the I-5 freeway off-ramp.

Another 22-year-old woman driving westbound in a silver Toyota Corolla struck the female pedestrian, who suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

"We believe that the vehicle had the green light," San Diego Police Lt. David Rohowitz said. "We're not sure but we received reports that the female [pedestrian] may have been intoxicated, however, that will be something that will have to be done in a postmortem evaluation by the medical examiner. "

Police have identified the woman, but are not yet releasing her name until her family can be notified.

Police do not suspect the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

The Traffic Division is investigating the accident.
