Neighbors Mourn Man Fatally Hit by Car in Mira Mesa

Neighbors in Mira Mesa are mourning the loss of an 85-year-old man who died crossing the street just outside his home in Mira Mesa.

The crash happened at 5:06 p.m. Sunday on the 8300 block of Ivory Coast at an unmarked crosswalk on Reagan Road, San Diego Police (SDPD) said.

Rosa Reyes, the victim’s neighbor, was outside at the time and watched as the man, who has not yet been identified by officials, was walking across Reagan Road as he had done so many times before.

“It’s not really good for me, you know. I know him for many years,” Reyes said through tears. “I saw the neighbor fly in the air.”

The driver, a woman in her 60s, was heading west on Reagan Road when she fatally struck him, SDPD officials said.

“I wouldn't say she was speeding, but she was going too fast for the conditions into the sun where she couldn't see,” an officer said.

Reyes said cars are always speeding down that road.

“He already crossed the street,” she added. “I don't know why she didn't see him. It’s so bad. Always the traffic is so fast at this point.”

The man was rushed to the hospital where he died of his injuries.

“It's very sad for today,” Reyes said. “It's Valentine's Day and my family know him for many years."

The driver has been cooperating with police. The driver has not been charged at this time.
