Peacocks Have a Rough Valentine's Day

Despite catlike crooning, fanned feathers and frantic searching, it was destined to be a lonely Valentine's Day for five wild peacocks who roam the streets, vacant lots and backyards of a central Vista neighborhood, according to our media partner the North County Times.

The iridescent blue birds have strutted through the hilly area near Escondido Avenue for more than two decades with peahens by their sides, but neighbors say coyotes took away the ladies while they roosted last spring, the paper reported.

Coyotes preyed on the birds over the years, slowly narrowing the flock to two hardy survivors whom locals named Missy and Bigboy. The pair produced at least five offspring, four males and one female, neighbors said.
