Mother Questions School's Handling of Loma Verde Bullying

Chula Vista parents are upset after they say their daughter threatened to commit suicide while at school because she was being bullied.

“Nobody told me anything,” said the mother of the girl, Monica. NBC7 is not using the mother’s last name to protect the identity of her daughter. “My daughter told me.”

The student’s parents are unhappy with the way the school handled what they say was ongoing bullying last year at Loma Verde Elementary School in Chula Vista.

“An eight year old had to come and open up to me because nobody else heard the cry for help to call me to see if there is anything that needs to be done immediately to ensure nothing further happens,” Monica said.

When her daughter was in third grade, Monica said, she came home from school and said she had put her hands around her neck while at school and said she didn’t want to live anymore.

Monica said she called the school to see what happened, she was told her daughter was taken to the administrator’s office and everything was under control.

Anthony Millican, a spokesperson for the Chula Vista Elementary School District, said, “a school psychologist, and a school nurse were with the administrator in the office.”

“The crucial next step was also keeping the parents in the loop that day about what happened,” said Millcan, though he admits that did not happen.

The girl’s parents say they are unhappy no one from the school notified them about the situation with their daughter, despite her “cry for help.”

Millcan says the district is taking steps to make sure protocol is followed.

Monica said she wanted to share her story to make sure what happened to her daughter does not happen to anyone else.
