A head-on collision killed one person and injured two others Sunday along State Route 76 near Pala.

Emergency crews were called to SR-76 just west of Adams Drive just after 10 p.m. for a serious injury accident.

Officials closed down the road in both directions as they tried to rescue a man trapped in a pickup truck that had flipped over.

Truck driver Douglas Johnson told NBC 7 he rolled up on the accident and was asked to help out.

“They asked me to pull up and turn on my lights so they could see what was going on,” Johnson said.

The man trapped in the truck was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two medical helicopters were requested but could not make it due to adverse weather conditions, officials said.
