Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy had one bad inning. The Padres offense had nine bad innings. That does not add up to a good day at the ballpark.
Kennedy did not allow a hit until the 6th inning, struck out seven in seven innings, and came up on the short end of a 3-1 loss to the Rockies on Thursday afternoon at Petco Park.
The only run the Padres offense could muster came in the 4th inning, when Xavier Nady smacked a solo home run to left. Nady only has 20 at-bats this season, yet leads the team with three homers.
The Friars only had five other hits, four of them singles, and grounded in to three double plays.
Kennedy's troubles came in the 7th inning. Corey Dickerson doubled and Troy Tulowitzki walked, then Justin Morneau hit a ball on the button right at Chris Denorfia in right field. Deno got a rare bad read, starting in only to watch the ball soar over his head for a double.
Dickerson scored to tie the game while Tulowitzki ended up on third base. In a tie game with one out and runners at 2nd and 3rd, the Padres decided to play the middle of the infield back. So, when Wilin Rosario hit a ground ball to Everth Cabrera, the shortstop decided to get the out at first while Tulowitzki scored what turned out to be the game-winning run.
The Padres and Rockies split their 4-game series. San Diego opens a 3-game set against the division-leading San Francisco Giants on Friday night at Petco Park.
