As a franchise, the Padres have played 7,264 regular season games (and 34 more in the playoffs). Sunday at Petco Park, the Friars came awfully close to recording their first no-hitter in a 2-1 win over the New York Mets.
Odrisamer Despaigne, the native Cuban making his fifth career MLB start, lost his no-no with two outs in the 8th inning against the Mets. Up until that point, he sure had no-no stuff.
"Once you get past the 6th, I think there's a legitimate chance," said Padres manager Bud Black. "I thought he was throwing well enough to think, hey, it could happen."
Despaigne finally surrendered a double to Daniel Murphy, then went from thinking "I could make history!" to realizing "I could take the loss!"
David Wright followed with a single to score Murphy, and the game was tied 1-1. You see, the Padres offense had only scored once, on a solo home run in the 4th inning by catcher Yasmani Grandal, who has gone deep in back-to-back games.
Despaigne's outing was the fifth-longest no-hit outing in Padres history.
After he left, Alex Torres was able to keep Wright from scoring, so Despaigne finished the day allowing two hits, one run, striking out five, and getting a no-decision.

The Padres won with two outs in the 9th inning when Seth Smith hit a comebacker to Mets pitcher Josh Edgin, who fell over trying to field the soft grounder and gave Smith just enough time to beat the throw to first base as Cameron Maybin scored the winning run.
The Padres took two of three games from New York, and now hit the road for a seven game road trip that starts Tuesday in Chicago against the Cubs.
