Padres Finalize Opening Day Roster

25-Man Team Set For April 1 In New York

On Friday the Padres sent LHP Tommy Layne and IF/OF Kyle Blanks to AAA Tucson. That leaves 32 players in Major League camp.

However, since six of them will start the season on the disabled list, and one of them will start it on suspension, the 25-man Opening Day roster is set.

And it goes a little something like this (in numerical order):

1 Ransom, Cody INF
2 Cabrera, Everth INF
4 Hundley, Nick C
5 Amarista, Alexi INF
8 Baker, John C
13 Denorfia, Chris OF
14 Kotsay, Mark OF
15 Guzman, Jesus INF
16 Street, Huston RHP
18 Quentin, Carlos OF
21 Marquis, Jason RHP
23 Alonso, Yonder INF
24 Maybin, Cameron OF
25 Venable, Will OF
33 Richard, Clayton LHP
34 Cashner, Andrew RHP
37 Volquez, Edinson RHP
45 Bass, Anthony RHP
53 Stults, Eric LHP
54 Thatcher, Joe LHP
55 Thayer, Dale RHP
57 Gregerson, Luke RHP
58 Brach, Brad RHP
66 Ross, Tyson RHP
68 Gyorko, Jedd INF

A few more interesting notes here are, Tyson Ross was named the 5th starter. Andrew Cashner will be used as a long reliever, not a late-inning specialist, because the Padres still want him to be a starting pitcher.

Both Cody Ransom and Jedd Gyorko made the team after coming to Spring Training as non-roster invitees.

Joe Thatcher is the only left-hander in the bullpen.

The Padres open the season on April 1 in New York against the Mets with Edinson Volquez on the mound.
