Otay Water District to Raise Rates

The new water rates would affect almost a quarter of a million people in the southern area of San Diego County

In the South Bay, water bills will be going up for almost a quarter of a million people in the southern area of San Diego County.

The Otay Water District announced Wednesday proposed rate increases of just more than 3 percent for water, and more than 4.5 percent for sewer service.

The district's board says higher rates are needed as the population increases in the area and the need for water grows.

Also, less recycled water will be used this year because of the closure of the Salt Creek Golf Course in March.

The new rates are scheduled to take effect the first of the year.
