Otay Mesa Man Rushes to Save Brother in House Fire

One person was transported to UCSD Medical Burn Center

An Otay Mesa man jumped into action when he heard his brother scream for help as fire engulfed their home early Tuesday.

The fire broke out at 12:30 a.m. on Clavelita Street located east of Beyer Boulevard and north of Interstate 905.

The property includes two homes. A board and care facility is operated inside one of the homes.

Antonio Shoam was sleeping when he heard his brother scream.

He said it was just instinct when he saw his brother on the ground in a room engulfed in flames.

“I really didn’t think about the fire, I didn’t think about any of it,” Shoam told NBC 7. “I just thought about getting my brother out.”

The fire began in a gazebo, San Diego Police said.

Officers evacuated all eight residents before San Diego Fire-Rescue crews arrived.

The fire burned through a back fence and spread to a neighbor's garage. Firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading further, knocking it down in 15 minutes.

One person was taken to the UCSD Medical Burn Center.

Investigators have ruled the fire accidental.
