Oside Pier Swim Was ‘Perfect'

Monday was a special day for the Oceanside Swim Club. Perfect weather, optimal conditions and record turnouts made its 80th annual Oceanside Municipal Pier swim a "roaring success."

"We have 468 swimmers ---- the best we've done in years," said Dean Johnson, vice president of the club. "And the donations and sponsorships are amazing, I know the economy is bad but companies were just hopping to get here."

The one-mile timed swim around the pier occurs each year on Labor Day and benefits the nonprofit Swim Club. According to its president, Larry Barr, efforts by the club over the last several months to reach out to the community have paid off, resulting in the strong showing of swimmers and support. Nearly 200 swimmers signed up the morning of this year's race.
