Operation I Do

Five brides wore white and kissed their grooms in uniform in front of the backdrop of New York’s Times Square Thursday as part of a special ceremony designed to honor the military while at the same time promote a cable network’s weddings series.

Among the happy couples, San Diegan Senior Chief Petty Officer Aaron Ryan and his fiancée Barbara Borowy.

Ryan has been deployed four times, the most recent of which was in 2007. In his first tour of duty he served oversees lasted four months. His other three tours lasted six to eight months. He and Borowy were dating at the time and managed to stay together despite the long separations.

Borowy, a plastic surgeon, also served in the U.S. Navy from 2001 to 2006 worked at the Naval Medical Center here in San Diego. She also served as a trauma surgeon in Afghanistan and Iraq but is currently practicing in Laguna Beach.

The couples pledged their vows to each other, then toasted and cut the cake. After, American Idol contestant Melinda Doolittle performed for the couples’ first dance.

WE TV sponsored the event with help from the USO. The cable network programs a number of bride shows including “Bridezillas” and “Amazing Wedding Cakes.”
