Safety Zone Enforced, One Year After Tragic Crash

Almost one year ago, a terrible accident at the Parade of Lights on Mission Bay took the life of 8-year-old Anthony Cole DeWeese.

Organizers dedicated this year's parade to DeWeese, who was killed December 20, 2009, when a coast guard boat crashed into his vessel.

This year, the Coast Guard put up a safety zone on the parade course. The zone includes waters within 150-yards of the parade route. It begins near the west side of Shelter Island and ends near the Coronado ferry terminal.

People and vessels won't be allowed to enter the zone between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The collision occurred as boats were gathered in San Diego Bay for an annual Christmas parade of decorated boats.

The 33-foot Coast Guard boat was responding to a report of a grounded vessel when it rammed the 26-foot Sea Ray pleasure boat.
Witnesses have said the Coast Guard boat was speeding.

Anthony Cole DeWeese was struck in the head and died at a hospital after the crash.
